Ernest Montaut Lorraine-Detriech 1907

Image
Early hand coloured lithograph. #art #motoring The grand father of motoring art Ernest Montant (1879-1909) is credited with inventing many artistic techniques, including speed lines and the deliberate distortion of perspective by bending and foreshortening the image in order to create the illusion of movement and speed. In 1907 he printed a series of 31 lithographs, each hand coloured , and bound them into a portfolio book which he titled "Dix Ans de Courses". Very few copies of this rare book survive complete. Quite rare too are the lithographs that were once contained in these portfolios. We have some examples in the gallery and they are beautiful. They are over 100 years old and the colours are still wonderful. The example above shows the 60hp Lorraine-Detriech of Duray on the 1907 Moscou-Saint-Petersbourg race.

Gary Smith Sculptures

Archie Scott Brown - Lister Jaguar The Last Race - Spa Grand Prix May 19th 1958. A tribute to one of the greatest racing drivers. Battling hard with Mastern Gregory driving the Ecurie Ecosse Lister Jaguar, they swapped the lead between them inches apart. The competition was so fierce that Archie dented his cars' nose on the rear of the Ecosse car on lap three. With Archie leading on lap six they arrived at the Seaman bend to find the track slick with rain, the right hand front wheel of Archies Lister hit a road sign snapping the track rod causing a disasterous accident - this great driver died from his injuires the next day. This sculpture is strictly limited to 9 castings, and available from Historic Car Art .

Now here's a strange piece... Pneu Continental - Artwork

Image
Now here's a strange piece... Original artwork for 'Pneu Continental' presumably for some sort of advertisement. By the looks of it possibly dates to around 1910. Not quite sure of the relevance of the pig being dragged across the road by it's hind leg... Gouache on artboard ...does it show off how wonderful the grip tyres is? Assume automobile occupants and pig escaped unhurt... Anyway, if it's your bag then it is available from our gallery ; you'll never see another!

Jim Clark and the Lotus 49: Italian Grand Prix 1967

Image
Well, it's been a few weeks since our last post what with exhibitions and holidays it's all been quite busy!  Here's a new piece of art to start you off... Jim Clark was leading the 1967 Italian Grand Prix at Monza after starting from pole in his Lotus 49 when a tyre punctured. He lost an entire lap while having the wheel changed in the pits. Rejoining sixteenth, Clark ripped back through the field, progressively lowering the lap record and eventually equalling his pole time of 1m 28.5s, to regain the lost lap and the lead. He was narrowly ahead of Brabham and Surtees starting the last lap, but his car had not been filled with enough fuel for such a performance: it faltered, and finally coasted across the finish line in third place. Jim Clark is shown at this race in this wonderful Gouache, ink and watercolour painting by well known AFAS member Craig Warwick which measures 49.4 x 42cm.

Leaving Jim Clark to win for Lotus and become World Champion with 3 races still left to run. Richie Ginther and Bruce McLaren made up the podium.

The third Matra-Simca is the MS660C #16 of Jean-Pierre Jabouille and David Hobbs. Latex paint on oak board. Size: 105.4 x 46.8cm (unframed) Want to know what's really remarkable about this work? "I started thinking about doing a painting, but I can't really afford artists materials; the paints, brushes and canvas. So I went out and bought some brushes, and decided to use our leftover house paint on a piece of leftover premium plywood. Because I don't have a studio, I did it on my hands and knees on the basement floor in our little junk room with the washer and dryer ... cozy!" said Paul. The sign of a good artist - can produce a great piece of art from anything! Buy the original or a limited edition print from our gall

Image
Roy Salvadori in the Aston Martin P214 leads Mike Parkes in the Ferrari 250GTO during the Coppa Inter-Europa at Monza in September 1963. Spanish Grand Prix - Montjuïc Circuit nr. Barcelona

Image
Today I have this great original poster for the 1969 race at Montjuïc. It seems that, like yesterdays race, it was another dull Spanish Grand Prix. Jackie Stewart won, finishing two laps ahead of second placed Bruce McLaren! The race was held here again in 1971 - Jackie Stewart took his third straight victory. This time by only 3 seconds from Jackie Ickx Ferrari. This race was the first Formula One race to use slick tyres (Firestones). In this painting by Tony Simmonds the No. 4 Ferrari of Belgian Jacky Ickx chases the winning No.11 Tyrell-Ford of Jackie Stewart...

The First Monaco Grand Prix 1929

Image
Next weekend is the F1 Monaco Grand Prix. Like many European races, the Monaco Grand Prix predates the current World Championship. The principality's first Grand Prix was organised in 1929 by Anthony Noghès, under the auspices of Prince Louis II, through the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM). Alexandre Noghès, Anthony's father, was founding president of the ACM, originally named Sport Vélocipédique Monégasque. The ACM made their first foray into motorsport by holding the Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo in 1911. In 1928 the club applied to the Association Internationale des Automobiles Clubs Reconnus (AIACR), the international governing body of motorsport, to be upgraded from a regional French club to full national status. Their application was refused due to the lack of a major motorsport event held wholly within Monaco's boundaries. The rally could not be considered as it mostly used the roads of other European countries. William Grover-Williams at the 1929 Monaco Grand Pr
