The Grossglockner High Alpine road was opened in 1935 after 5 years of construction. It links the Austrian state of Salzburg with the state of Carinthia and is named after the Großglockner, Austria's highest mountain. The alpine pass is 1,953 metres (6,407 ft) at it's highest point. To celebrate it's opening an 'International Automobile Race' was held, in the form of a mountain climb. The race was held twice more in 1938 and 1939. "Onwards and Upwards" by John Ketchell This painting by John Ketchell entitled "Onwards and Upwards" shows the Type D Auto Union of Hans Stuck tackling the 1939 race. During practice in fine weather he set a course record (still standing today) of 8:59.6 mins, an average speed of 84.7kmh. Weather on the mountain is extremely changeable and race day was windy, wet and foggy. Visibility was poor. #Ferrari 312PB. #motoring #art The 1971 1000kms of Nurburgring and the Ferrari 312PB driven by Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni. "Out of the Red" by John Ketchell The pair put the car on pole with a time of 7:36.1 but unfortunately did not finish due to overheating problems. The race was won by Vic Elford and Gérard Larrousse driving the Porsche 908/03. Historic Car Art has commissioned two pieces to celebrate this at the forth coming Race Retro Historic Motorsport Show. The first is "On the Prowl" by John Ketchell. This acrylics on canvas work shows the 1961 Oulton Park GT Race  and Graham Hill about to overtake Roy Salvadori to take the maiden victory for the E-type. The second is a lovely pen, ink and prismacolour pencil drawing on coloured paper by Paul Chenard, showing the 'lightweight' racing version of the E-type. The 1970 Le Mans 24 hours is immortalized in the the Steve McQueen film "Le Mans". Much of the film footage was taken from this race. It rain heavily throughout the night, and it was the first time the traditional "Le Mans start", in which the drivers run across the track to enter their cars, was replaced by a variant in which the drivers already sat in their cars. Porsche won for the first time.
