This speed was possible due to the detuned inline-8 borrowed from the Type 35B Grand Prix car that was supercharged to produce 120 bhp. #f1 #art The Bugatti T51 of Achille Varzi (No.10) and the Alfa Romeo Monza of Baconin Borzacchini blast away from the start of the 1933 Monaco Grand Prix. Varzi was to win the race, with Borzacchini second 2 minutes behind. These were the only two cars to complete 100 laps, that's almost three and a half hours of racing around the streets of Monaco! Next weekend is the F1 Monaco Grand Prix. Like many European races, the Monaco Grand Prix predates the current World Championship. The principality's first Grand Prix was organised in 1929 by Anthony Noghès, under the auspices of Prince Louis II, through the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM). Alexandre Noghès, Anthony's father, was founding president of the ACM, originally named Sport Vélocipédique Monégasque. The ACM made their first foray into motorsport by holding the Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo in 1911. In 1928 the club applied to the Association Internationale des Automobiles Clubs Reconnus (AIACR), the international governing body of motorsport, to be upgraded from a regional French club to full national status. Their application was refused due to the lack of a major motorsport event held wholly within Monaco's boundaries. Well known Austrian artist Klaus Wagger will be another artist joining at Race Retro later this week. In this painting entitled "Monaco 33-10" the Bugatti T51 of Achille Varzi and the Alfa Romeo Monza of Tazio Nuvolari do battle. Varzi was to win the race; Nuvolari retired with a blown engine. Showing his watercolour paintings for the first time at Race Retro, Tony Simmonds will be represented within the exclusive Historic Car Art Gallery. Tony is no stranger to automotive illustration having done magazine illustrations of the subject as long ago as the late 1970's. In this painting the Ferrari of 4th placed Clay Regazzoni leads the Lotus-Ford of Jacky Ickx around Mirabeau during the 1974 Monaco Grand Prix.
