An etching is no ordinary print. It is a time consuming and skilled art. Very few motoring artists work in this medium, the examples here are by Peter Hearsey - well known to Goodwood goers as the artist behind all of the Festival of Speed posters since the first event. To produce each etching, a metal (usually copper) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is acid-resistant. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where he wants a line to appear in the finished piece, so exposing the bare metal. The plate is then dipped in a bath of acid, technically called the mordant (French for "biting") or etchant. The acid "bites" into the metal, where it is exposed, leaving behind lines in the plate. The remaining ground is then cleaned off the plate. The plate is inked all over, and then the ink wiped off the surface, leaving only the ink in the etched lines. Sorry for the radio silence. July was a busy month, culminating with a successful Silverstone Classic; Thank you to all our customers who visited. We were closed for the first two weeks of August, now back to catch up and prepare for Goodwood Revival on 16-18th September... What's new? Well quite a lot. We'll kick off with this great AEROSHELL poster from the earlier 1930's celebrating Alfa Romeo's Grand Prix victory at Picardie, France in 1933. No graphics, just wonderful period typesetting and of course the very recognisable AeroShell logo. Held on 21 May 1933 this was the 9th running of the event. Phillippe Etancelin won from pole position by 3 minutes from Raymond Sommer (also Alfa Romeo) and Marcel Lehoux driving a Bugatti T51. This original poster measuring 58.5 x 79.5 cm is in excellent condition and is linen mounted.

#f1 #art The Bugatti T51 of Achille Varzi (No.10) and the Alfa Romeo Monza of Baconin Borzacchini blast away from the start of the 1933 Monaco Grand Prix. Varzi was to win the race, with Borzacchini second 2 minutes behind. These were the only two cars to complete 100 laps, that's almost three and a half hours of racing around the streets of Monaco! Tazio Nuvolari walks with his Alfa Romeo 'Tipo B' P3 from the paddock to start the 1935 French Grand Prix at Montlhéry. The Alfa Romeo 158/159, also known as the Alfetta was one of the most successful racing cars ever produced. It won it's first race in 1938 and was still winning in 1953! In "Four Ever Alfa" by Sheridon Davies the team cars are seen in the paddock at the British Grand Prix in May 1950 where they took the first three places. Giuseppe Farina (No.2) won, Luigi Fagioli (No.3) 2nd and British guest driver Reg Parnell (No.4) 3rd. Car No.1 driven by Juan Manuel Fangio retired. Farina went on to win the first Drivers' World Championship in 1950. Fangio and Fagioli took second and third places. NEW : Available as a limited edition print .

Well known Austrian artist Klaus Wagger will be another artist joining at Race Retro later this week. In this painting entitled "Monaco 33-10" the Bugatti T51 of Achille Varzi and the Alfa Romeo Monza of Tazio Nuvolari do battle. Varzi was to win the race; Nuvolari retired with a blown engine. An artist new to exhibiting in the UK is Paul Chenard. He will be represented at Race Retro by Historic Car Art showing alongside some of Europe's finest. This pencil and pastel drawing shows Fangio, Farina and Ascari during the 1951 Italian Grand Prix at Monza and will be one of the original pieces on show by this artist.
