AeroShell Alfa Romeo Poster from 1933

Sorry for the radio silence. July was a busy month, culminating with a successful Silverstone Classic; Thank you to all our customers who visited. We were closed for the first two weeks of August, now back to catch up and prepare for Goodwood Revival on 16-18th September...

What's new? Well quite a lot. We'll kick off with this great AEROSHELL poster from the earlier 1930's celebrating Alfa Romeo's Grand Prix victory at Picardie, France in 1933. No graphics, just wonderful period typesetting and of course the very recognisable AeroShell logo.

Held on 21 May 1933 this was the 9th running of the event. Phillippe Etancelin won from pole position by 3 minutes from Raymond Sommer (also Alfa Romeo) and Marcel Lehoux driving a Bugatti T51.


This original poster measuring 58.5 x 79.5 cm is in excellent condition and is linen mounted.

An etching is no ordinary print. It is a time consuming and skilled art. Very few motoring artists work in this medium, the examples here are by Peter Hearsey - well known to Goodwood goers as the artist behind all of the Festival of Speed posters since the first event. To produce each etching, a metal (usually copper) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is acid-resistant. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where he wants a line to appear in the finished piece, so exposing the bare metal. The team ran cars in events as diverse as the Monte Carlo Rally and Tour de France to Le Mans and the World GT Championship, which they won in 1965 with Carroll Shelby and the Daytona Coupe Cobra.
