The grand father of motoring art Ernest Montant (1879-1909) is credited with inventing many artistic techniques, including speed lines and the deliberate distortion of perspective by bending and foreshortening the image in order to create the illusion of movement and speed.

In 1907 he printed a series of 31 lithographs, each hand coloured, and bound them into a portfolio book which he titled "Dix Ans de Courses". Very few copies of this rare book survive complete. Quite rare too are the lithographs that were once contained in these portfolios. We have some examples in the gallery and they are beautiful. They are over 100 years old and the colours are still wonderful. The example above shows the 60hp Lorraine-Detriech of Duray on the 1907 Moscou-Saint-Petersbourg race.
