Won by Jim Clark for Lotus by over a minute after leading from pole position to the finish. Tony Maggs was second for Cooper and Graham Hill third for BRM. Clark also took fastest lap (2:21.6).

Jim Clark went on to win 7 of the 10 races that season and be crowned World Champion.



Here we have an original poster for the event. Officially named: 49e Grand Prix de l'A.C.F. Michel Beligond (1927-1973) produced yet another stunning piece of artwork for this poster.

Printed by Thivilliers it measures 40 x 59cm and is conservation linen mounted.

Motoring Art Etchings

An etching is no ordinary print. It is a time consuming and skilled art. Very few motoring artists work in this medium, the examples here are by Peter Hearsey - well known to Goodwood goers as the artist behind all of the Festival of Speed posters since the first event. To produce each etching, a metal (usually copper) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is acid-resistant. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where he wants a line to appear in the finished piece, so exposing the bare metal. The plate is then dipped in a bath of acid, technically called the mordant (French for "biting") or etchant. The acid "bites" into the metal, where it is exposed, leaving behind lines in the plate. The remaining ground is then cleaned off the plate. The plate is inked all over, and then the ink wiped off the surface, leaving only the ink in the etched lines. Monaco 33-10 by Klaus Wagger

Well known Austrian artist Klaus Wagger will be another artist joining at Race Retro later this week. In this painting entitled "Monaco 33-10" the Bugatti T51 of Achille Varzi and the Alfa Romeo Monza of Tazio Nuvolari do battle. Varzi was to win the race; Nuvolari retired with a blown engine.
