HISTORIC CAR ART

An etching is no ordinary print. It is a time consuming and skilled art. Very few motoring artists work in this medium, the examples here are by Peter Hearsey - well known to Goodwood goers as the artist behind all of the Festival of Speed posters since the first event. To produce each etching, a metal (usually copper) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is acid-resistant. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where he wants a line to appear in the finished piece, so exposing the bare metal. The plate is then dipped in a bath of acid, technically called the mordant (French for "biting") or etchant. The acid "bites" into the metal, where it is exposed, leaving behind lines in the plate. The remaining ground is then cleaned off the plate. The plate is inked all over, and then the ink wiped off the surface, leaving only the ink in the etched lines. In 1964 Alan Mann Racing became a top Ford Factory Team sporting the distinctive racing livery of Red and Gold. The team ran cars in events as diverse as the Monte Carlo Rally and Tour de France to Le Mans and the World GT Championship, which they won in 1965 with Carroll Shelby and the Daytona Coupe Cobra. The iconic red and gold livery graced cars from Mk1 Escorts and Cortinas to Lightweight GT40s and the F3L prototype. Some of the best drivers of the period from Graham Hill and Sir Jackie Stewart to Sir John Whitmore and Frank Gardner raced for the team, which achieved substantial successes in many different forms of the sport. The Grossglockner High Alpine road was opened in 1935 after 5 years of construction. It links the Austrian state of Salzburg with the state of Carinthia and is named after the Großglockner, Austria's highest mountain. The alpine pass is 1,953 metres (6,407 ft) at it's highest point. To celebrate it's opening an 'International Automobile Race' was held, in the form of a mountain climb. The race was held twice more in 1938 and 1939. "Onwards and Upwards" by John Ketchell This painting by John Ketchell entitled "Onwards and Upwards" shows the Type D Auto Union of Hans Stuck tackling the 1939 race. During practice in fine weather he set a course record (still standing today) of 8:59.6 mins, an average speed of 84.7kmh. Weather on the mountain is extremely changeable and race day was windy, wet and foggy. Visibility was poor. Sorry for the radio silence. July was a busy month, culminating with a successful Silverstone Classic; Thank you to all our customers who visited. We were closed for the first two weeks of August, now back to catch up and prepare for Goodwood Revival on 16-18th September... What's new? Well quite a lot. We'll kick off with this great AEROSHELL poster from the earlier 1930's celebrating Alfa Romeo's Grand Prix victory at Picardie, France in 1933. No graphics, just wonderful period typesetting and of course the very recognisable AeroShell logo. Held on 21 May 1933 this was the 9th running of the event. Phillippe Etancelin won from pole position by 3 minutes from Raymond Sommer (also Alfa Romeo) and Marcel Lehoux driving a Bugatti T51. This original poster measuring 58.5 x 79.5 cm is in excellent condition and is linen mounted.
