By Paul Chenard. #Motoring #Art This fantastic sketch using pen & ink, markers, and pencil on archival white paper is by talented Canadian artist Paul Chenard. It shows the German Grand Prix winning Type-A Auto Union of Hans Stuck at the Nurburgring in 1934 being followed by 2nd placed Luigi Fagioli in his Mercedes-Benz W25. There were 35 Grand Prix that year ; 6 designated "Grandes Épreuves" - the German Grand Prix was one of them. This original drawing is available from Historic Car Art along with other work by Paul Chenard. The image will form the cover of Paul's limited edition art book on the 1934 Grand Prix season - available in early 2011... reserve your copy now!

Early hand coloured lithograph. #art #motoring The grand father of motoring art Ernest Montant (1879-1909) is credited with inventing many artistic techniques, including speed lines and the deliberate distortion of perspective by bending and foreshortening the image in order to create the illusion of movement and speed. In 1907 he printed a series of 31 lithographs, each hand coloured , and bound them into a portfolio book which he titled "Dix Ans de Courses". Very few copies of this rare book survive complete. Quite rare too are the lithographs that were once contained in these portfolios. We have some examples in the gallery and they are beautiful. They are over 100 years old and the colours are still wonderful. The example above shows the 60hp Lorraine-Detriech of Duray on the 1907 Moscou-Saint-Petersbourg race.
