AeroShell Alfa Romeo Poster from 1933

Sorry for the radio silence. July was a busy month, culminating with a successful Silverstone Classic; Thank you to all our customers who visited. We were closed for the first two weeks of August, now back to catch up and prepare for Goodwood Revival on 16-18th September...

What's new? Well quite a lot. We'll kick off with this great AEROSHELL poster from the earlier 1930's celebrating Alfa Romeo's Grand Prix victory at Picardie, France in 1933. No graphics, just wonderful period typesetting and of course the very recognisable AeroShell logo.

Held on 21 May 1933 this was the 9th running of the event. Phillippe Etancelin won from pole position by 3 minutes from Raymond Sommer (also Alfa Romeo) and Marcel Lehoux driving a Bugatti T51.


This original poster measuring 58.5 x 79.5 cm is in excellent condition and is linen mounted.

Motoring Art Etchings

An etching is no ordinary print. It is a time consuming and skilled art. Very few motoring artists work in this medium, the examples here are by Peter Hearsey - well known to Goodwood goers as the artist behind all of the Festival of Speed posters since the first event. To produce each etching, a metal (usually copper) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is acid-resistant. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where he wants a line to appear in the finished piece, so exposing the bare metal. The plate is then dipped in a bath of acid, technically called the mordant (French for "biting") or etchant. The acid "bites" into the metal, where it is exposed, leaving behind lines in the plate. The remaining ground is then cleaned off the plate. The plate is inked all over, and then the ink wiped off the surface, leaving only the ink in the etched lines. Monaco 33-10 by Klaus Wagger

Well known Austrian artist Klaus Wagger will be another artist joining at Race Retro later this week. In this painting entitled "Monaco 33-10" the Bugatti T51 of Achille Varzi and the Alfa Romeo Monza of Tazio Nuvolari do battle. Varzi was to win the race; Nuvolari retired with a blown engine.
