Steve McQueen's Birthday (b. 1930, d. 1980)

Image
The 1971 Film Le Mans starred Steve McQueen and featured actual footage from the 1970 24 Heures du Mans. In the film, he was shown starting the race in the blue #20 Gulf-Porsche 917K, which in the real race was driven by Jo Siffert and Brian Redman. The race-leading white #25 Porsche 917 "Long tail" was piloted by Vic Elford/Kurt Ahrens. This painting (below) by John Ketchell shows the rain soaked 1970 Le Mans and the Ferrari 512S of Regazzoni / Merzario about to be overtaken by the Porsche 917L of Elford / Ahrens. The film was released in 1971 to coincide with that years race. The original poster above has a great shot of the Ferrari 512's emerging from the spray during the previous years race. It is a highly sort after poster due to the great image and 'Le Mans' film link...and difficult to find (although we have a copy).

"Rover & Bentley out to Lunch" by Sheridon Davies

Image
One of my favorite little paintings from our very well received exhibition at Race Retro... Rover guards the vintage Bentley whilst the owner pops into the butchers for their lunch - pork pie for him, sausages for Rover. Then where are they off too? Away for a few nights by the looks of the luggage trunk in the back. Surprising still available... this little acrylics on canvas measures 30.5 x 23cm. For both the painting and limited edition prints contact Historic Car Art.

Well known Austrian artist Klaus Wagger will be another artist joining at Race Retro later this week. In this painting entitled "Monaco 33-10" the Bugatti T51 of Achille Varzi and the Alfa Romeo Monza of Tazio Nuvolari do battle. Varzi was to win the race; Nuvolari retired with a blown engine. The 1933 Monaco Grand Prix was the first GP at which practice times decided the starting grid. Before that is was decided by ballot... Acrylics on Canvas 130 x 90cm

Varzi Refueling by Peter Hearsey

Image
Peter Hearsey is one of a select band of artists whose reputation is truly international. His attention to detail combined with his exploration of colour and tone give his work a distinctive and personal quality. He has been a member of the Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS) in America since being elected in 1993. Each year since it began in 1993 he has produced the poster image for the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This gouache on board painting shows Achille Varzi refueling his Alfa Romeo Tipo-B 'P3' during the 1934 Coppa Acerbo. Framed it measures 48 x 45cm. Having won the race in 1930 for Maserati Varzi went on to win it again in 1935 for Auto Union.
